Telnic, founded in 1988, has applied to ICANN to implement a cutting-edge technology and solutions for a new internet-communications based Top Level Domain (TLD): .tel. This new TLD is designed to provide a universal text naming and navigation system for contact information and related content accessed from Internet enabled communications devices. In effect, it replaces digit based phone numbers by a letter based addressing structure and creates an entirely new Internet space dedicated to telecom.
On May 10, 2006 the ICANN Board of Directors announced its approval of the .tel sponsored top-level domain.
